What was it about large, metal buildings that got her so excited? The rustic color? The strong, overly hygienic smell? The nostalgia?
Mushroom trooped along in a line path just in front of the Shelshire Pokemon Lab. She paced - more like skipped - around, fiery hair waving with each breeze. Her face was dotted with light freckles and her eyes shone like polished amber. The girl didn't look it, but deep down she was nervous about receiving her first pokemon from the professor. The last thing she wanted was to disappoint someone, which is usually what she ended up doing, being so clumsily naive. Mushroom's pearly jacket was zipped up to her chest, a record low for her, but being the heat that day, she had no choice. The trip had been long, and her city-slicker body couldn't take such a quick change of environments.
Suddenly, Mushroom stopped her pacing, a child-like smile dancing across her lips, and forced herself up to the door. She couldn't wait any longer!
Knock! Knock! Kno-
Mushroom felt her body weaken, and her blood run cold. There, looking up at her from the side of a grassy patch, was a Pluteus Cervinus. A Fawn Mushroom. A M-U-S-H-R-O-O-M!
The orange-haired girl was shocked, despaired, and all and all, resembled her dead aunt Linda. Her knees began to shake, and in a sudden panic, Mushroom let out a deafening scream, falling to the ground in a phobic fit.
Oh boy...

A young woman opened the door in a rush when she heard the scream. Who in their right mind would be screaming this early? She gasped when she saw the girl on the floor. The lady quickly sank to her knees, and took a look at the girl. "Are you ok?"

"Y-Y-Y-Yeah..." Mushroom seemed to stare vacantly off into space, deep worry lines digging like fissures into the skin under her eyes. Getting to her feet, the trainer, though still shaking, bowed respectfully to the woman. She hadn't meant to cause a rucus, but by all means she was grateful to have someone there. She could always feel more courageous with someone else around.
"I'm so sorry! I never meant to cause any trouble. I came to receive a pokemon." Mushroom blabbered nervously, never lifting her head from the bow to look upon the woman.
Inside her a knot of fear and embarrassment tightened uncomfortably. She had such a ridiculous fear, and yet she could never get over it. People had tried. Her parents, her siblings, her friends, they had all given their time to free her from this phobia, but nothing could be done.

"That's good," she said, smiling while standing up. "What were you scared of?" The woman shook her brown hair out of her face, and tightened her white lab coat. "You never caused me any trouble. This was my most interesting encounter with a new trainer though. Ok. Would you llike of our starters or would you like to pick a type?"

"Oh, i-it's nothing," Mushroom gave an uneasy smile to the woman, trying to be convincing enough.
Then she realized something. She had no idea what pokemon she wanted! Mushroom stood a moment, a puzzled expression washed over her face. A stray strand of auburn hair fell across her face, and her seafoam eyes were dulled, much unlike how they'd been before.
But what type did she like? Water and bug. She knew that much, but did she really want one of those for her partner? Would choosing a normal starter be better? Did she even know what other pokemon were like?
The questions piled up in the girl's mind, until, finally, she lost her whole train of thought in a single shake of the head. She just had to rool the dice, so to speak.
"Do you have any Poison?"
Mushroom didn't know what possessed her to say poison. That was probably her LEAST favorite type, or , at least second favorite, right under grass. She had gotten nervous. Her mouth just blurted out the first type that jumped out.

The woman rose her eyebrow like she didn't believe her, but then shrugged. "Poison? I do believe we have a few. Ok let me go get one for you. Anyway please come in," said Professor Molly. The female opened the door, and walked back inside. She then exited the room.

The girl walked lightly into the lab, her eyes almost bugging from her head. It was more amazing inside! It reminded her so much of the crowded city of Saffron from which she'd come.
Mushroom didn't correct herself when the woman went to look for a pokemon. She didn't want to look like the totally clueless girl that she was. She only scolded herself for being so thoughtless; Again. 'Maybe it won't be bad.' She thought hopefully, 'There can be some, uh, cute poison pokemon, right?'
She rolled back onto her heels in impatience at the woman's return. What pokemon would she get? Would it be the right partner for her? Would she have to admit what a complete idiot she was? A nervous shudder glided over Mushroom's body.
She would have to deal.

The woman returned holding a pokeball and a starter pack. "The pokemon that was picked was Seviper. Would you like to keep it or would you like one of our starters?" she asked.

"Seviper...? Could I see the seviper first?" Mushroom gazed at the pokeball, a weird feeling creeping up her spine.
Seviper? What was 'Seviper'? Some poison-type pokemon that was certain. Honestly, Mushroom had no clue to what this pokemon was, or even what it looked like. The poison pokemon she knew were the koffing and grimer that hung around her city, and maybe the occasional night visit from a zubat.
Once again, Mushroom felt out of the loop. She didn't even know what a 'seviper' was. She was sure that any other trainer, however new, would know any kind of species if set with a need to know situation such as this.
A faint blush crept onto the girl's face, but a goofy smile kept its place. She was embarrased to death from being there, but, in the end, she'd be getting a pokemon. That alone made her smile.

A nervous look crossed the woman's face, but it was replaced a small smile. She held up the pokeball and opened it. Out of the red and white orb came a snake. A huge black snake with marking all around it stared at Mushroom. It opened its mouth and showed its fangs.
"So... Do you want it?" asked Molly.

Mushroom eyes focused on the snake, a calmness settling over her. Her eyes were as round and blank as stones on a riverbed, and her lips were puckered, as if in a deciding fashion. Her mind seemed to be working. The blush slowly faded away, back into her pale cheeks. She stared searchingly into the creature's eyes, her own concentrated, as if trying to penetrate any wall that could be blocking her from the seviper's mind. She seemed conpletely unaware of the danger that this pokemon posed, should it decide to turn on her and attack.
The girl squatted down, meeting the snake at eye level, and outstretched a hand hesitantly, arm shaking ever so slightly. She grew closer to it, hand poised carefully over the snake's head to pat it. Then, suddenly, she quickly snapped her arm back to her, cradling it to her chest, looking like the seviper had bitten her right there and then.
Then, as if nothing had conspired, Mushroom rose to her feet and let out a long, lazy yawn. The flush returned to her face, and her lips spread apart in a goofy grin. Finally, the girl replied:
"It's perfect!"

Molly rose her eyebrow as she watched them. This was new to her. The snake seemed to calm her down or something. She shrugged and handed her its pokeballs. "He's all yours." You recieved a Seviper! Name: Species:Seviper Type:Poison Gender:Male Personality:(you choose) Level:6 Attacks:Wrap, Poison Sting, Tail Whip, Iron Tail

Mushroom took the ball into her hands, gingerly stroking the smooth surface. Her eyes, dancing with elation, stared back at her from the reflection in the sphere, and an excited shudder ran up her spine. She had done! She was now an official pokemon trainer! Even her pokemon, Seviper, a poison pokemon, was fairly cute. In fact, Mushroom felt a small burden rise from her shoulders. Poison pokemon didn't seem as intimidating or creepy as they had back when she'd lived in Saffron.
Clutching the ball firmly in her palms, Mushroom looked to the woman and gave her the widest smile thought possible by human lips. She was absolutly beaming, eyes barely shut, and lashes brushing her cheek bones. Tilting her head, Mushroom payed nomind as more of her fiery hair to grazed her nose, falling just between her eyes.
"Thank you so much," She chirped, bowing to the woman named Molly. "I can't say how grateful I am!"

"It's no problem," Molly said, smiling at her. Yes, this trainer had to be her strangest trainer yet. That wasn't exactly a bad thing either. "You better get going on your journey! Bye!"

Mushroom rose up from her lengthy bow and gave Molly another grin. She was right. The day was wittling away, and starting her travels in the dead of night didn't sound too appealing. The new trainer said a last 'Goodbye' and was out the door within seconds, waving blissfully as she went.
"Thanks again!" Mushroom managed to say one last time before her voice could could no longer reach within the lab's confines.
Inside her pack, her seviper's pokeball rattled among the cluttered belongings also stuffed in there, almost as if the pokemon inside wanted to get a move on as well. And, though she didn't have time to notice, Mushroom felt much safer as she left the lab doors.
Mushroom did feel that something was missing, though.
